Pokhara as a center of adventure is a remarkable place of natural beauty situated at an altitude of 827m from the sea level and 200km west of Kathmandu valley. Pokhara has several beautiful lakes and panaromic views of Himalayan peaks with the population of around 95,000.
The natural beauty and panaromic view of Himalayas rising behind them create the peace and magic. Pokhara is not only the starting point for trekking but also the place to take relax and enjoy with the natural beauty.
Pokhara is part of trade route extending between India and Tibet. This is the land of Magars and Gurungs hardworking farmers and warriors who have earned worldwide fame as gurkha soldiers and Thakalis are important ethnic group here for their entrepreneurship.
The temperature of pokhara is around 15 degrees Celsius in winter and 35degrees Celsius in summer. Monsson season lasts from mid june to mid September is very wet records the highest rainfall in the country. October and April is the best time to visit pokhara.
Damside and lakeside are two focus districts of foreign visitors to pokhara with their strips of hotels and restaurants.
Interesting Place of Pokhara:
Phewa Lake:
Phewa lake is the center of all attractions in pokhara which is the largest lake in the kingdom 1.5 by 4km. Wooden boats and sailboats can be rented on reasonable price around lakeside.
The water of lake is warm and swimming is pleasant which is neither deep(47m at most) nor particularly clean. At the eastern shoreline of the lakeside there is seemingly endless trip of lodges, restuarants, bookshops and souvenir shops. Splendid view of the mountains is one of the attraction part of lakeside when the still water reflects the peaks, creating a double image.
Begnas Lake and Rupa Lake:
These two lakes Begnas and Rupa are located about 15km from Pokhara which is divided by the forested hillock called Panchabhaiya Danda. The lakes offer the perfect nature retreat due to their relative seclusion. Fishing and boating can be done at these lakes.
Barahi Temple:
Barahi Temple is the most important religious monument built in the middle of Phewa Lake, the two-storied pagoda is dedicated to the boar manifestation of Ajima representing the female force Shakti.Especially on saturdays devotees can be seen carrying male animals and fawl to be sacrificed to the deity across the lake.
World peace Pagoda:
The Peace Pagaoda is the Budhhist stupa situated on top of a hill on the sooouthern shore of Phewa lake. The shrine is great point which offers spectacular views of the Annapurna range and Pokhara city.
Seti Gandaki:
Seti Gandaki river runs completely underground at places. The river appears hardly two meters wide at a certain points but its depth is over 20meters. The view of Seti Gandaki river’s dreadful rush and deep gorge can be odserved from Mahendra Pul, a small bridge.
Devi’s Fall:
Devi’s Fall popularly knowm as Patale Chhango is an awesome waterfall lying about 2km south west of Pokhara airport on the highway to Tansen. An interesting modern legend says that a foreigner named David was skinnydipping in the Pardi river when the floodgates of the dam were opened sweeping him into an underground passage beneath the fall never to be seen again.
Gupteswar Gupha:
The sacred cave Gupteswar lies 2km from Pokhara airport. Right cross from Devi’s fall there is a entrance of Gupteswar Gupha almost 3km long which has some bighall size rooms and some passages. Phallic symbol of Lord Shiva is preserved here that holds special value for Hindus. For entrance Rs5 is charged and taking picture inside cave is strictly prohibited.
Mahendra Gufa:
Mahendra Gufa, the large limestone cave locally known as Chamero Odhaar(“House of Bats”). It is said to be discovered around 1950 bye splendid boys. It is the best to bring own torch to see the stalactites and stalagmites, most of then have been carted out by souvenir hunters.
The Old Bazaar:
Pokhara’s traditional bazaar is colorful and ethnically diverse traders. Temples and monuments can be seen ties to the Newar architecture of the Kathmandu valley. It is located about 4km from lakeside. The market’s original charm is alive and well.
Bindyabasini Temple:
This temple is center religious activity in the old bazaar dedicated to goddess Bhagwati another manifestation of Shakti. Especially on saturday the parklife grounds take on a festive fair.
Museums-
Pokhara Museum:
Pokhara Museum is located between the airport and Mahendra Pul, which reflects the ethnic mosaic of western Nepal.The lifestyles such as the Gurungs, Thakali and Tharu are attractively displayed. It opens daily except Tuesdays from 10am to 4pm. Entrance charge is Rs5 and Rs 10 is extra charge for cameras.
Annapurna Museum:
Annapurna Museum is located at Prithvi Narayan Campus east of the old bazaar managed bye Annapurna Conseravtion Area Project. The museum has esceptional collection of butterflies, insects, birds and models of wildlife as well as sample of precious and semi precious stone and volcanic rocks. It open daily except saturday and holidays from 9am to 4pm.
Himalayan Vista:
The Annapurna panorama visible on the northern skyline of Pokhara is quite incredible. Annapurna I to IV are the main peaks and the beautiful Machhapuchre (named after its twin peaks) which can be seen from here. Between April and September the mountains will probably be hidden in the clouds. On the banks of Fewa Lake a nice evening with the mountain range as the backdrop.
Nightlife and Entertainment:
Other than dining there is not much of a nightlife on pokhara. The town shuts down by about 10:30 in the evening. You can hang out some of the bars and pubs up an hour long nightly Nepali Cultural show with dances and such.
Around Pokhara:
As pokhara is the starting and ending point of popular trekking routes in Nepal longer treks like Jomsom Trek, Annapuran circuit and Annapurna sanctuary treks begins from here. Pokhara also provides shorter treks around the neighbouring hill and villages. The popular treks are given below:
Ghachowk Trek:
2days trek through Lhachowk to Ghachowk and down to Batulechaur.
Naudanda Trek:
2days to Naudanda from Suikhet then back through kaski.
Ghorepani Circuit:
5days to 7days upto the Gurung village of Ghandruk village views of Annapurna range.
Kahun Danda:
Day trip north east of Pokhara,1560m altitude.
Sarangkot:
Day trip great view of Mountain range including Dhaulagiri,1592m altitude.
